Our classes are offered to children of the ages 8 and older. We use hand tools ONLY in our shop classes and children are closely supervised at all times. The first class will always cover safety rules and we will go over each tool and how it is used properly. We will give students a chance to practice with each tool before the project begins to make sure they are confident and proficient in using them. We focus on safety and maintaining a clean working area at all times. Our classes are small (6-8 students) so we can be attentive to each student and can provide immediate assistance when needed.
We offer monthly themed classes that are once a week (2 hours long) for 4 weeks. We will offer a new theme each month. Since theses are beginner classes, we assume that each child is coming in with minimal to no woodworking experience, but we will cater to each individual and for that reason, projects and timing of completion may differ from each student. We will offer those with a bit more experience the appropriate projects to cater to their skill level.
Our program is a drop-off program, which means we discourage parents staying in the shop with their children while classes are being held. We love our parents, we really do, but being parents ourselves, we know first hand that children can behave differently when we are present and we also understand that it can be difficult to hold back on our own correction or instruction toward them when we are with them. We want each child to get the most out of their 2 hour classes and we want to be able to have each child focus on our lead only. We also find that children love to surprise and see the smiles and excitement from you when they show their completed projects to you for the first time. This gives them a sence of accomplishment and fulfillment.
If you want to work alongside your child, or if your child has any special needs, we do offer private lessons and can work to tailor a class suited for you and your child's/family's needs.
Each project that leaves our shop is uniquely and "perfectly" made by each child. While we do correct/coach children on fixing obvious mistakes and maintaining proper safety mechanics, we do not focus on imperfections. Woodworking is a skill that takes many years to master. We focus on the accomplishment and character- building that comes from making each project. Please do not expect your beginning woodworker to come home with a master-level piece, but kudos to them if they do.
